Health and Welfare

The Health and Welfare Committee handles the hearing and vision screenings that are held in the fall for 3 days.

The screenings occur over a 3-day period usually in late September/early October. During these 3 days, we need both certified and non-certified volunteers to screen all students in the school.

Non-certified Volunteers: Volunteers are needed during the 3 days in morning and afternoon shifts to aid the certified volunteers and also help move the students to the stations, back and forth to class, and keep the students orderly. It’s a fun way to see all the students come through! Scheduling is flexible – if you need to come in late or leave early, we still need! We need 10 non-certified volunteers during each shift.

Certified Volunteers: Volunteers that have attended a 3 hour training and are certified by the state of Texas to do either the hearing or vision screenings. We need certified volunteers those 3 days in morning and afternoon shifts. Training takes place in August, September and May. Once you are trained, certification expires in 5 years. Other schools are in huge need of certified volunteers to help with their screenings, so if you have availability, you have the opportunity to help in other elementary and middle schools.

If you are interested in helping with the Health and Welfare Committee during screening time, please check the Health and Welfare box on Volunteer Manager. Information for training certification and non-certified volunteer needs are sent out using that distribution list.

Another part of Health and Welfare is Clinic Volunteers. We staff the clinic with volunteers every day, all year long. We have volunteers that commit to working a weekly shift and also have need for volunteers willing to substitute for the committed weekly volunteers. In the clinic, volunteers help check students in, take temperatures, aid in assessments, handle minor scrapes, to name a few of the duties. Clinic Volunteers have a separate category on Volunteer Manager, so if you are interested in being a clinic volunteer, please check the box on Volunteer Manager. If you are interested in working a weekly shift in the clinic.
